Havelock, also known as Swaraj Dweep, is the largest island in Ritchie's Archipelago. This island's coastline stretches for almost 58.5 km, with Port Blair as its capital city. With very low human habitation, this alluring paradise is undeniably any nature lover's haven - a serene break from the dreary hustle of life.
History of Havelock Island
Enveloped by white sand beaches, this dendrophile's paradise was previously named after a British general Sir Henry Havelock. This island was once indigenous to only the tribal natives. However, this enclave has been home to settlers from different parts of India over the years, and the Indian government actively encourages tourism here. Nonetheless, a significant portion of this island remains untouched by modern technology and offers a getaway for those looking for a break. As the largest island of the archipelago, the new name of Havelock Island officially is Swaraj Dweep cause of its rich history. In 2018, to pay tribute to Subhash Chandra Bose, the Prime Minister of India retitled Havelock Island. Renamed as Swaraj Dweep, this island is home to verdant rainforests, active volcanoes, rich fauna and pristine beaches.
